Offence Summary

Attempted to engage in sexual communication with a child after being caught by paedophile hunters in a shopping centre.

Full Description

Thomas Webb, aged 31, of High Street, Newcastle, was sentenced at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court after pleading guilty to attempted sexual communication with a child.

The court heard that on 15 November 2022, Webb was using the Wink website when he began messaging a decoy who stated she was 13 years old. Webb, who claimed to be 27, sent explicit messages including a photograph of his genitals and discussed having sex with the child. He also asked for photographs of her stomach, stating he had a "thing for stomachs", and instructed her on performing a sex act.

Webb was tracked down by the paedophile hunter group to the shopping centre where he worked and was arrested on 27 November 2022. He had no previous convictions but had received a caution in 2014 for similar behaviour.

Recorder Michael Duck KC sentenced Webb to 18 months' imprisonment, suspended for two years, with a 12-month mental health treatment requirement, a Building Choices programme, and a 15-day rehabilitation activity requirement. Webb was also made subject to a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and placed on the Sex Offenders' Register for 10 years.
