Full Description

Mark Campbell, aged 37, has been convicted of the murder of Jane Fitzpatrick, a 48-year-old woman, in Glenrothes, Scotland. The conviction came following a trial at Edinburgh High Court, where Campbell was found guilty on Tuesday, 13 June 2023. In addition to the murder charge, he was also found guilty of a number of assaults and sexual offences perpetrated against women in the Fife area over an 18-year period, from 2003 to 2021.

The body of Jane Fitzpatrick was discovered inside a car in the Cable Road area of Glenrothes on Monday, 9 August 2021. The discovery prompted a thorough investigation by Police Scotland, which uncovered a pattern of violent behaviour by Campbell towards multiple victims. Detective Inspector Scott Roxburgh, leading the investigation, described the attack on Jane as 'an extremely violent attack that has left Jane’s family devastated'. He emphasised the ongoing support for the family and commended the cooperation from Jane's relatives, friends, and the local community during the enquiry.

Campbell's crimes extended beyond the fatal incident, revealing a history of assaults and sexual offences against women in the Fife region. These offences spanned nearly two decades, highlighting a prolonged period of predatory and violent conduct. The trial at Edinburgh High Court provided compelling evidence that led to his conviction on all counts. Roxburgh further stated, 'Campbell will now have to face the consequences of his actions,' underscoring the gravity of the offences and the commitment to justice.

Following the conviction, Campbell is scheduled to be sentenced at Stirling High Court on Thursday, 20 July 2023. Police Scotland has reiterated its stance against such violence, with Roxburgh noting, 'Violence like this has no place in our society and Police Scotland will continue to work closely with the public and our partners to bring perpetrators to justice.' This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat gender-based violence and sexual crimes in Scotland.
