Offence Summary

Bruce Buchanan was sentenced to an order of lifelong restriction for multiple rapes and violent assaults against women in the Inverness and north Highland areas between 1986 and 2017.

Full Description

Bruce Buchanan, a 61-year-old man, was convicted at the High Court in Edinburgh in February 2025 for a series of sexual and violent offences committed against women in the Inverness and north Highland areas of Scotland. The offences, which spanned over three decades from June 1986 to June 2017, included rapes, assault to severe injury, and other assaults. Following a thorough investigation by Police Scotland, Buchanan was arrested on 4 February 2021 after his victims came forward with crucial information.

The court heard details of Buchanan's abusive behaviour, which demonstrated a pattern of violence and sexual abuse towards multiple women. He showed no remorse for his actions, as highlighted by Detective Inspector Gordon Patullo of Police Scotland. Patullo commended the victims for their courage in reporting the crimes, stating: "Buchanan is an abusive individual who showed no remorse for his violent and abusive behaviour against these women." The investigation relied heavily on the victims' testimonies, which were essential in building the case against him.

On 30 March 2026, at the High Court in Edinburgh, Buchanan was sentenced to an order of lifelong restriction. This sentence requires him to serve a minimum of five years in prison, after which the parole authorities will determine if and when he may be released. Additionally, a non-harassment order was granted in respect of his victims to protect them from further contact. The sentencing reflects the severity of the offences and aims to provide some closure to those affected, as noted by Patullo: "I hope this outcome provides them with some sense of closure."

Police Scotland emphasised their commitment to tackling such crimes, with specialist officers available to support victims. The case underscores the importance of reporting sexual abuse, regardless of the time elapsed since the incidents occurred.
