Offence Summary

Antoni Skinner from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, used aliases 'Uhura' and 'Satan' in the Wonderland Club to distribute child sex abuse material as part of an international paedophile ring. He was sentenced to 12 months in prison and registered for seven years.

Full Description

Antoni Skinner, from Cheltenham in Gloucestershire, was convicted for his role in the Wonderland Club, an international consortium of 180 paedophiles who built and shared a vast digital archive of over 750,000 child sex abuse images via encrypted internet channels. Employing the pseudonyms 'Uhura' and 'Satan', Skinner engaged in the network's distribution efforts, which included a stringent entry process demanding 10,000 original abusive images and protocols to thwart investigations.

Operation Cathedral, sparked by 1997 arrests in the US, led to extensive raids on September 2, 1998, across three continents, capturing Skinner among others. UK law enforcement, aided by the National Crime Squad, pinpointed members through ISP tracking, exposing the club's long-term operation and its content of extreme child exploitation affecting 1,263 victims, with scant identifications—only 17 confirmed globally.

Sentenced in February 2001 at Kingston Crown Court by Judge Kenneth Macrae, Skinner received 12 months imprisonment for conspiracy to distribute indecent images, with the term shortened owing to his guilty plea from the three-year statutory maximum. The judge declared, 'Despite pandering to the basest interests of man, you would have to be given credit for pleading guilty,' while condemning the underlying perversity. Skinner was mandated to the sex offenders register for seven years, serving at least six months incarcerated.

The light sentences for the group, including Skinner, were lambasted by charities like the Children's Society and Barnardo's as inadequately punitive. NCH's John Carr criticised, 'This type of child sex abuse will be tolerated by today's society.' Conversely, DCI Alex Wood of the investigation team affirmed the terms as the longest feasible then, crediting the case with driving legislative reforms, including the UK's post-2001 increase to 10-year maxima, and contributing to 50 international convictions.
