Full Description

Manzoor Hassan, a 41-year-old man from Huddersfield, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for a series of grave sexual offences and drug-related crimes committed against a vulnerable teenager. The case emerged from West Yorkshire Police's Operation Tendersea, a major investigation into the sexual abuse and exploitation of girls in the town.

In 2005, Hassan met the victim, a 16-year-old girl living in a children's home in Huddersfield. He systematically manipulated and exploited her vulnerability, addicting her to crack cocaine and heroin to gain control. Once dependent, he raped her and forced her into prostitution to fund his own drug habit, as described by prosecutor Kate Batty during the trial at Leeds Crown Court. Batty told the jury: 'The entire scenario was a cynical and manipulative design by him to ensure he had a regular source of income for his own drug habit.'

Hassan was convicted on charges of rape, controlling a child prostitute, and supplying class A drugs. This sentence is to be served alongside an existing five-year term he was already serving for similar child sexual exploitation and drugs offences, for which he was jailed in 2018. The court heard details of his 'utterly wicked' and callous treatment of the victim, who struggled to escape his hold after he gained power over her.

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Thornes of West Yorkshire Police commented on the severity of Hassan's actions: 'Manzoor Hassan's treatment of a young and vulnerable victim in this latest case was both utterly wicked and callous in the extreme. He committed serious sexual offences against her and then forced her into prostitution for his own financial benefit. After he gained a hold over the victim she found it very difficult to break free. It is hard to find words to describe how vile his abuse and exploitation of the victim in this case has been.' The operation has uncovered a pattern of grooming and exploitation in the area, with Hassan arrested as part of these efforts to protect children from such predators.

The case underscores the long-term impact of Operation Tendersea, which has led to multiple convictions for sexual abuse in Huddersfield. Hassan, residing on Bland Street, was held accountable for his crimes spanning back to 2005, highlighting the persistence of authorities in pursuing justice for historical offences.
