Full Description

Cameron Davidson, a 20-year-old man from Ship Alley, Farnborough, Hampshire, became the subject of a paedophile hunter sting operation after engaging in explicit online communications with what he believed to be a 12-year-old girl.

Members of the Alpha Predator Hunters group created a fake profile on the dating app Badoo, using a manipulated photo of a woman altered with a Snapchat filter to appear as a child. Davidson initiated contact with the profile, and upon learning the decoy claimed to be 12 years old, he responded that he was 19. The conversation quickly escalated to WhatsApp, where Davidson sent sexually explicit messages, including requests for the decoy to engage in sexual activity. He sent pictures of his penis on two occasions and asked for a photo of her breasts.

  • The decoy arranged to meet Davidson at Barry railway station on 21 August 2019.
  • Davidson cancelled the meeting, citing work commitments, but sent a photo of himself in his work uniform.
  • Hunters used this to locate his workplace in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, and confronted him on the street.

During the confrontation, two men from the group asked Davidson if he had arranged to meet a 12-year-old, to which he admitted but claimed he thought she was 18. He was detained until police arrived and was arrested on 21 August 2019. A search of his black Samsung mobile phone revealed two category A indecent images of children, four category B images, seven category C images, and nine extreme pornographic images.

In his police interview, Davidson acknowledged the decoy had stated she was 12 but claimed he believed she was 'messing around'. He attributed his actions to a 'high sex drive' and requested treatment, denying any sexual interest in children. He later pleaded guilty at Cardiff Crown Court to attempting to communicate with a child, attempting to engage a child in sexual activity, and possession of indecent and extreme images.

At the sentencing hearing on 27 November 2020, Recorder Greg Bull QC remarked: 'Sexual offences are always serious and the offences you have committed are likely to have a heavy impact on your life. Having sexual contact with a child is something that the courts abhor, as does society.' Defence barrister Ruth Smith argued that Davidson was a young man who 'needed help' and would benefit from probation intervention.
