Full Description

A Hartlepool woman has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for a series of depraved sexual offences against a child, as reported by The Northern Echo. Sandra O'Rourke, aged 47, from Harbour Court in Hartlepool, appeared at Teesside Crown Court where she pleaded guilty to 13 counts of child sexual abuse offences.

The charges included two counts of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child, seven counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and four counts of sexual assault on a child. Judge Stephen Ashurst, during sentencing, highlighted the repeated nature of the abuse and its profound impact on the victim, stating: 'The victim was told by you that they would never be believed and they were threatened by you. You told them you would deny what you had been doing until your dying day.' He further noted that the youngster suffered flashbacks and felt unable to forget the trauma inflicted by O'Rourke.

  • The abuse occurred over a period that robbed the young and vulnerable victim of their childhood.
  • O'Rourke's behaviour was described as 'sickening' and 'exceptionally depraved' by the court.
  • The sentencing took place this morning at Teesside Crown Court, with an additional one year on extended licence imposed.

Following the hearing, Sergeant Paul West from Cleveland Police’s Child Abuse Vulnerable Adults (CAVA) unit commended the victim's bravery: 'The court heard in a victim impact statement how this offending has had a significant impact on the victim’s life. I’d like to praise their bravery in coming forward and their strength throughout the court process. We welcome today’s sentence and hope it will give the victim some closure.' The case underscores the severe consequences of child sexual exploitation, with O'Rourke's actions leaving lasting psychological harm on the victim.
