Full Description

Kai Lewis, from Tweedsmuir Road in Tremorfa, Cardiff, was convicted of serious sexual offences against two young victims during his teenage years. The abuse began when Lewis was in his mid-teens and targeted his first victim, who was of primary school age at the time. He carried out a number of sexual assaults, including acts that left the victim with lasting flashbacks and severe mental health issues.

The second victim, also of primary school age, was abused by Lewis when he was in his late teens. The offences included assault by penetration, causing a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, and two counts of sexual activity with a child. Both victims were too young to recognise the behaviour as abnormal initially; one only realised the wrongdoing after receiving sex education at school, while the other understood during a sleepover.

In victim personal statements read at Cardiff Crown Court, the first victim described how the abuse had 'ruined my life and changed me as a person'. She stated: 'I have been abused by this man since I was a child and it has shaped the person I am today. I was not able to have a normal childhood or teenage years like my friends and it has had an impact on all adult aspects of my life. I have not been able to form healthy relationships or trust another man in my life.' She detailed the massive impact on her mental health, including numerous suicide attempts, as she 'thought it was the only way out of her suffering', and continued to suffer flashbacks where 'the image of him still haunts me to this day'.

The second victim expressed: 'He made me feel disgusting and that I need to scrub my skin at all times. I can feel his hands on me and have vivid dreams about it happening all over again. He made me feel vulnerable and scared of all men... I can't remember my childhood, I think I was trying to block out all the memories... I am on anti-depressants, struggling with my mental health and felt like I wanted to end my life.' She noted feeling like she was 'finally getting the justice I deserve' and looked forward to healing.

Lewis denied the charges but was found guilty following a trial. Prosecutor Kathryn Lane highlighted that the victims 'thought the defendant's behaviour was normal as they were so young when it occurred. They were unaware this ought not to be happening.' The victims contacted police separately years later, leading to Lewis's arrest and prosecution. In mitigation, defence barrister Heath Edwards noted that Lewis committed the offences as a youth, is registered blind, unemployed, and has an 'unstructured lifestyle', with one prior conviction for robbery.

At the sentencing hearing on Friday, 9 December 2025, Judge Richard Kember sentenced Lewis as if he were under 18 due to his age at the time of the offences. He received four years and six months' imprisonment, an indefinite restraining order, indefinite sex offender notification requirements, and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for eight years. The case was heard at Cardiff Crown Court, with involvement from South Wales Police.
