Offence Summary

Jaroslaw Szklarski was convicted of one count of rape and pleaded guilty to sexual assault in a sustained attack on a woman in Banbury, receiving an 11-year prison sentence.

Full Description

Jaroslaw Szklarski was sentenced alongside two others at Oxford Crown Court on 16 May 2024 for participating in the 'abhorrent and sustained' rape of a woman in Banbury, Oxfordshire. The incident unfolded between about 10pm on 12 April 2023 and midday on 13 April 2023 near Banbury railway station.

Szklarski, of no fixed abode, joined Patryk Kubacz and Damian Sidor in subjecting the unnamed victim to extended sexual and physical violence, including repeated rapes. He was found guilty by unanimous verdict of one count of rape and had pleaded guilty to one count of sexual assault.

The court trial ended on 15 October 2023 at Oxford Crown Court, confirming the convictions for rape and associated offences. The victim managed to escape after being threatened with a knife and coerced into obtaining drugs, then alerted a passerby who contacted police, leading to the swift arrest of Szklarski and his accomplices by Thames Valley Police officers.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Charis Fernley of Thames Valley Police described the case as involving 'a truly shocking, abhorrent and sustained attack on a young woman, who was targeted by three men.' She highlighted the victim's resilience, saying, 'I would like to commend her bravery and strength to report this to the police and for supporting the investigation throughout, including during the court process.' Fernley stressed the rarity of such instances but affirmed the force's commitment to pursuing justice for sexual offences.

Szklarski was imprisoned for 11 years, received a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and was placed on the sex offenders' register indefinitely.
