Offence Summary

Shakil Munir, a taxi driver, groomed and sexually exploited teenage girls by offering them lifts and pressuring them into sexual acts, including oral sex and intercourse.

Full Description

Shakil Munir, aged 32 from Middlesbrough, was convicted at Teesside Crown Court for his role in grooming and sexually exploiting vulnerable teenage girls. As a taxi driver residing on Tollesby Road, Munir targeted young victims by offering free lifts in his car, which he used to isolate and pressure them into performing sexual acts. The court heard detailed accounts of how he would take the girls out and coerce them into oral sex or full intercourse, treating them as objects for his sexual pleasure.

During the six-week trial in November 2013, Munir denied the charges but was found guilty of four counts of sexual activity with a child and one count of child abduction. The offences involved multiple victims, some as young as 14, who were part of a total of seven affected girls described as loosely connected. Cleveland Police stated that Munir, along with his co-defendants, 'preyed on young, vulnerable girls' through manipulative tactics including offers of takeaway food, lifts, and drugs.

Judge John Walford, passing sentence, emphasised the lasting damage inflicted on the victims, noting they were 'children who lacked the maturity of experience to cope with your manipulative ways'. He expressed hope that the sentencing would allow the now 'scarred' girls to move forward, as they had suffered considerable ongoing harm, including turmoil at school and abusive messages on social media. Munir was jailed for eight years, received a sexual offences prevention order, and a driving ban of eight years.

  • Guilty of: Four counts of sexual activity with a child, one count of child abduction
  • Sentence: 8 years imprisonment
  • Additional: Sexual offences prevention order, 8-year driving ban

The case was prosecuted by the Crown Prosecution Service, with Gillian Milton, the Violence Against Women and Girls co-ordinator, praising the victims' courage and hoping the sentence would provide closure. This incident highlights a pattern of child sexual exploitation in the Tees area, as reported by BBC News on 5 December 2013.
