A Cardiff couple, Richard Mountstephens from Trowbridge and Kelly Thomas from Mynachdy, have been imprisoned for their involvement in the sexual exploitation of a child. The pair groomed the young girl and coerced her into sexual acts with several men over a period of weeks, capturing indecent images of the abuse and posting them on a website that advertised sexual services. This exploitation was driven by their desire for personal financial benefit.
The abuse came to light when the victim confided in her family, prompting an investigation by South Wales Police. Mountstephens and Thomas were arrested in April 2020. Despite denying the charges throughout the proceedings, both were convicted at Cardiff Crown Court of controlling a child in relation to sexual exploitation. Mountstephens faced additional convictions on three counts of possessing indecent images of a child and one count of perverting the course of justice, as he attempted to tamper with evidence by altering upload dates on the incriminating images.
Sentencing occurred on 8 February 2023 at Cardiff Crown Court. Thomas, aged 32, received a sentence of six years' imprisonment. In addition to their custodial terms, both offenders were placed on the Sex Offenders Register, subjected to a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and issued with an indefinite Restraining Order to protect the victim. The investigation, led by Detective Constable Rachel Green of South Wales Police, involved specialist teams including forensics, financial investigators, intelligence analysts, and digital forensics experts.
Detective Constable Rachel Green commented on the case: 'From the beginning of the investigation, both suspects adamantly denied any involvement in the offences. Mountstephens even attempted to alter key evidence by changing the dates indecent images had been uploaded to the website. The investigation involved many specialist departments including forensics, financial investigation, intelligence analysis, and digital forensics, and we are glad that justice has now been served.' The victim, described as resilient despite the devastating impact, has shown remarkable patience throughout the process, with hopes that the sentencing provides her with closure.
This case underscores the severe consequences of child sexual exploitation, as reported by South Wales Police in their official statement published on 10 February 2023.
