Offence Summary

Ross Jackson was convicted of raping and sexually assaulting two teenagers and possessing extreme pornography, leading to a 23-year jail sentence. He smirked during the victims' impact statements and denied the allegations, claiming they were fabricated.

Full Description

Ross Jackson, a 39-year-old man from Lowther Street in Chester le Street, County Durham, was sentenced to 23 years in prison following his conviction for a series of sickening sexual attacks on two teenagers. The case was heard at Newcastle Crown Court, where Jackson was found guilty after a trial of multiple offences, including rapes and sexual assaults.

The attacks left the victims traumatised, with long-lasting consequences as noted by Judge Robert Spragg. One victim, in her impact statement, expressed relief that Jackson could no longer harm others and encouraged those with similar experiences to speak out, stating, 'There are people who want to help and will listen.' During the proceedings, Jackson smirked as prosecutor Andrew Finlay outlined the case and as the victims' statements were read aloud, showing a lack of remorse.

In addition to the rape and assault charges, Jackson admitted to possessing extreme pornography involving images of adults engaging in sex acts with animals, specifically a horse and a donkey. Judge Spragg described Jackson as a high risk of direct contact sexual offending and a high risk to children and the public. The judge praised the victims' courage in coming forward, which not only brought Jackson to justice but also protected potential future victims.

Despite having no prior convictions, a good work record, and some family support, as mentioned by his defence counsel Lorraine Mustard, Jackson received a substantial sentence. The 23-year custodial term was deemed insufficient alone to protect the public, so Judge Spragg imposed an additional five-year extended licence period and required lifelong registration as a sex offender.

The case was investigated by Northumbria Police, and details were reported by the Sunderland Echo on 4 February 2026.
