Ryan Martin Elstow, a 35-year-old man from Wellingborough, was imprisoned for seven years on the Falkland Islands after admitting to multiple child sex offences involving sexual activities with children.

Full Description

A 35-year-old man from Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, has been sentenced to seven years' imprisonment on the Falkland Islands for committing multiple child sex offences. Ryan Martin Elstow, a former RAF serviceman, admitted to sexually abusing children during his time on the remote British overseas territory, located 8,000 miles from his home.

The case came to light following an investigation by the Royal Falkland Islands Police. Elstow was charged last year with eight counts of 'sexual activity with a child', contrary to the Sexual Offences Act 2003. Although UK officials initially sought an extradition order to bring him back to the Falklands for trial, Elstow voluntarily travelled to the islands to face justice. He appeared in the territory's only magistrate's court and pleaded guilty to seven of the charges, while denying the eighth. Senior Magistrate Malcolm Simmons found him guilty of the remaining offence in November 2022.

Sentencing occurred on 11 January 2023 in the same court. Elstow's lawyer, James Ross, addressed the court, stating that his client's actions displayed 'rank indifference' to the suffering of others, as reported by Penguin News. In mitigation, Mr Ross highlighted that Elstow had pleaded guilty to seven counts, voluntarily appeared in court, and had experienced 'real trauma' while serving with the RAF in Afghanistan. Despite these factors, the court imposed a total sentence of seven years' imprisonment.

A spokesperson from the Falkland Islands Prosecution Service confirmed to NorthantsLive that Elstow will serve his sentence in His Majesty’s Prison Stanley, which has a prison population in single figures. He is likely to be deported to the United Kingdom upon completion of his sentence. Elstow is believed to have returned to Northamptonshire in recent years in an attempt to start a new life before the charges caught up with him.

The offences underscore the long arm of international law enforcement in addressing child sexual exploitation, with the Royal Falkland Islands Police playing a key role in the investigation and prosecution.
