Offence Summary

Salah Ahmed El-Hakam was convicted of rape against a young girl in Rotherham as part of a grooming and exploitation gang operating from 1998 to 2005.

Full Description

Salah Ahmed El-Hakam, aged 39 from Tudor Close in Sheffield, was imprisoned for 15 years at Sheffield Crown Court following his conviction for one count of rape. The offence was part of the sexual exploitation of girls aged 13 to 16 by a group of men in Rotherham between 1998 and 2005.

This case is linked to Operation Stovewood, the NCA's investigation launched in 2014 after a report exposed the abuse of at least 1,400 children in Rotherham from 1997 to 2013. El-Hakam, of British Pakistani heritage, contributed to the grooming and coercion of vulnerable girls using drugs, alcohol, and manipulation, leading to degrading sexual abuses including gang rapes.

While specific incidents directly attributed to El-Hakam were not detailed individually in court reports, he was involved in the collective targeting and intimidation of victims, who were assaulted in locations such as Clifton Park, Rawmarsh tip, and Ulley Country Park. The trial revealed patterns of girls being passed between offenders and threatened with violence or abandonment.

Judge Sarah Wright addressed the perpetrators: 'Each in your own way perpetrated, facilitated or encouraged the sexual abuse of these young girls. Each of the complainants in this case were groomed, coerced and intimidated.' Victims' testimonies included: 'I feel like I'm constantly fighting to get justice for what they did to me... These men have destroyed me.' Paul Williamson of the NCA said: 'They used violence and intimidation and believed they were untouchable by law enforcement.' The judge emphasised the extreme vulnerability of the victims and the lasting trauma caused.

The sentencing reflects broader efforts to hold accountable those responsible for the Rotherham scandal, providing closure to survivors while acknowledging the irreversible harm inflicted.
