Full Description

In a disturbing incident that unfolded in Ashington, Northumberland, 21-year-old Devon Critchlow exhibited predatory behaviour by targeting a vulnerable woman in her own home. The attack occurred in September 2024, when Critchlow, who had been following the victim, forced his way inside after she answered the door, mistakenly believing him to be someone she knew.

According to details presented at Newcastle Crown Court, Critchlow punched the woman and placed his hands around her neck in a non-fatal strangulation attempt during the late-night assault. The victim was left traumatised by the sudden and violent intrusion. CCTV footage captured Critchlow stalking the property beforehand, which proved crucial in identifying him as the suspect. Following a public appeal by Northumbria Police, members of the community came forward to confirm his identity.

Critchlow was arrested shortly after the incident and later appeared in court, where he admitted to charges of assault, non-fatal strangulation, and sexual assault. The court heard how the attack appeared motiveless, with the victim simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. In sentencing, the judge imposed a term of five years and three months' imprisonment, along with an additional five years on licence upon release. Critchlow was also required to sign the Sex Offenders' Register and was issued a restraining order to protect the victim from further contact.

Detective Sergeant Steven Gibson of Northumbria Police commented on the case, stating: "This was a truly shocking and awful incident for the victim, who appeared to be targeted for the sole reason that she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. We won't tolerate the type of predatory behaviour exhibited by Critchlow that night – and I'm glad to see he's now behind bars." The sentencing took place on 17 April 2025, underscoring the authorities' commitment to addressing such serious sexual offences swiftly and decisively.
