Offence Summary

Joseph McCabe, a convicted rapist, admitted to breaching the terms of the police sex offenders register by failing to notify authorities of his intention to travel outside the UK, leading to him going on the run to the Irish Republic. He was originally sentenced to 14 years in prison for the rape and burglary of a 64-year-old pensioner in 2005.

Full Description

Joseph McCabe, a 29-year-old man originally from west Belfast, Northern Ireland, has a history of serious sexual offences that led to significant legal consequences. In 2005, McCabe and an accomplice broke into the home of a 64-year-old woman on 1 February, subjecting her to a terrifying and prolonged ordeal involving a violent sexual assault accompanied by significant gratuitous violence, as described by the presiding judge. This burglary and rape prompted a 14-year custodial sentence imposed by Judge Kevin Finnegan QC at Belfast Crown Court.

Released from jail in April after serving half of his sentence, McCabe breached the conditions of his licence and the police sex offenders register by failing to notify authorities of his plans to travel outside the UK. He fled to County Donegal in the Irish Republic along with another convict, sparking an island-wide manhunt. The pair eventually handed themselves in to the authorities.

In a recent court appearance at Belfast Crown Court, McCabe pleaded guilty to the breach charges. Judge Kevin Finnegan QC, who had originally sentenced him for the pensioner's rape, suspended his licence for a year and remanded him back into custody for 12 months last May. On Thursday, the judge adjourned passing sentence on the breach matters until pre-sentence probation reports are compiled next month, as reported by the BBC in their article dated around late 2012 or early 2013.

This case highlights the stringent monitoring of sex offenders post-release, with McCabe's actions demonstrating a failure to comply with legal obligations designed to protect the public. The original offence involved extreme violence against a vulnerable pensioner, underscoring the severity of the crimes committed.
