Offence Summary

Eid Anwar Fathi Najjar pleaded guilty to one count of rape and one count of sexual assault against a woman in York in July, facing an inevitable custodial sentence.

Full Description

A 20-year-old man from York, Eid Anwar Fathi Najjar, has admitted to committing serious sexual offences against a woman, leading to his impending jail term. The incidents, which involved rape and sexual assault, occurred in York in July. Najjar, previously residing on Burton Stone Lane, appeared at York Crown Court on Thursday via video link from prison, where he entered guilty pleas to both charges relating to the same victim.

Judge Sean Morris made it clear during the hearing that a custodial sentence is inevitable for Najjar, stating, “A custodial sentence in this instance is inevitable. It’s just a question of how long.” The judge ordered a pre-sentence report to be prepared, with sentencing scheduled for Thursday, December 4, at York Crown Court. Najjar, who required an Arabic interpreter to follow the proceedings, remained remanded in custody following the short hearing.

The case highlights the Crown Prosecution Service's (CPS) commitment to prosecuting sexual offences. A CPS spokesperson explained, “The strength of our case against Eid Anwar Fathi Najjar means he has indicated guilty pleas to rape and sexual assault – sending a strong message that the CPS will not hesitate to bring those who commit these vile offences to justice where possible.” The offences were investigated by North Yorkshire Police, as indicated by the image provided in the article.

Originally, another individual, Mohammed Abrahim Abuzet from Bradford, had been charged alongside Najjar but the CPS dropped the rape charge against him after reviewing the evidence. The spokesperson noted, “In line with our duty to review live cases, it was determined that our evidential test for prosecution against a second defendant was no longer met. This decision has been fully communicated to the complainant in this case and we will continue to be available to assist her in any way we can.”
