Offence Summary

A man who raped and sexually abused a young boy on multiple occasions in Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire over two decades ago.

Full Description

A man has been jailed for 12 years at Nottingham Crown Court for a campaign of sexual abuse against a child that began more than 20 years ago. Richard Tung, now aged 42, targeted the boy at addresses in South Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire when the victim was a young child.

The victim came forward to report the non-recent abuse in 2022, disclosing the serious impact it had had on his mental health. Despite the absence of physical evidence, detectives from Nottinghamshire Police built a compelling case by corroborating key parts of his testimony. This included independent and previously confidential disclosures the victim had made to a mental health counsellor, as well as to friends and family.

When first interviewed in June 2023, Tung denied the allegations and even claimed he had been subjected to inappropriate sexualised behaviour by his victim. He continued to plead his innocence throughout a trial at Nottingham Crown Court in January 2026. After considering the evidence, the jury found him guilty of two counts of rape, one count of indecent assault, two counts of causing or inciting a boy under 13 to engage in sexual activity, and two counts of engaging in sexual activity with a boy.

On 17 April 2026, Tung, of Penisa’rwaun, Caernarfon, returned to the same court to be sentenced. He was given a 12-year custodial term. Detective Sergeant Lee Myatt, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Like many victims of childhood sexual abuse, the victim in this case came slowly to the realisation that what had happened to him was not a normal part of childhood. It was in fact sexual abuse of the most serious nature committed against a child by a grown man.”

DS Myatt added that while Tung begins his lengthy prison sentence, he hoped the case would serve as a reminder that it is never too late for victims of non-recent abuse to come forward and report what happened.
