Full Description

John William Marshall, a 68-year-old resident of Harrogate, has been convicted and sentenced to 13 years in prison for the sexual assault of a young girl that occurred in Northallerton during the 1990s. The case, which came to light decades later, highlights the long-term impact of child sexual abuse and the importance of historical investigations.

According to North Yorkshire Police, Marshall abused the victim on multiple occasions after gaining the trust of her family. He befriended them and was left alone with the girl while her parents went shopping, using these opportunities to carry out his attacks. The assaults were reported to police and social services at the time by the victim's parents, but due to a series of complications, no criminal action was pursued then.

The victim, now an adult, contacted authorities in 2019 following Marshall's prior conviction for possessing over 24,000 indecent images of children. This prompted a cold case review, leading to Marshall's trial at York Crown Court in August 2023, where he was found guilty. The sentencing took place on 21 December 2023.

Adam Harland, Cold Case Review Manager at North Yorkshire Police, commented on the case: 'In coming forward, the victim has now had her voice heard, her evidence believed by a jury, and she has obtained the conviction of the man who had grossly and indecently abused her as a child.' He further noted that time is no barrier to justice for victims of child sexual abuse.

Police believe there may be additional victims of Marshall and have urged anyone affected to come forward. The case underscores Marshall's history as a serial sex offender, with this conviction adding to his previous offences involving indecent images.
