Full Description

A Norfolk man, Ashton Drake, has been jailed for over four years following a series of online sexual offences against a 14-year-old girl. The case came to light when the victim's mother discovered a suspicious parcel containing crotchless underwear addressed to her daughter and promptly contacted the police.

Norwich Crown Court heard that between December 24, 2019, and January 4, 2020, Drake, then 18 years old, initiated online communication with the teenager, who was nine years his junior. Prosecuting, Isobel Ascherson detailed how Drake sought naked images of the victim and filmed himself performing sexual acts, encouraging her to do the same. The mother's investigation revealed naked images of Drake on her daughter's tablet, prompting immediate police involvement from Norfolk Constabulary.

Drake, now 27 and residing in Sheringham, appeared in court on October 13, 2023, having pleaded guilty to one count of causing a child to watch a sexual act, two counts of causing a child to engage in sexual activity, and one offence of sexual communication with a child. The victim, protected by legal anonymity, provided a poignant impact statement read in court, expressing her hatred for Drake and describing ongoing anxiety, the need for constant companionship, and suicidal feelings resulting from the abuse.

Judge David Pugh, sentencing Drake to four years and six months' imprisonment, emphasised the significant and lasting impact of the offending on the victim and her family. In mitigation, Michael Clare argued that Drake's actions stemmed from naivety and immaturity rather than predatory intent, noting that the defendant had initially avoided responsibility but ultimately accepted his guilt. Additionally, Drake was made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and placed on the sex offenders' register for life.

The case underscores the dangers of online interactions for minors, with Norfolk Constabulary's swift response highlighting effective community reporting in combating child sexual exploitation.
