Full Description

Omar Safdar, 30, from Oldham, was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment in February 2022 at Bradford Crown Court after being convicted of three counts of rape. These crimes took place between 2008 and 2009, involving the grooming and sexual abuse of a vulnerable child in Keighley by a gang that supplied her with alcohol.

Safdar's conviction was among those of six men jailed that month for a total of 66 years, stemming from West Yorkshire Police's investigation into reports made by the adult victim. The abuses included repeated rapes and elements of humiliation, profoundly affecting the victim's life.

In court, Judge Andrew Hatton detailed the severe harm caused, based on the victim's impact statement. Safdar's sentence aligns with others in the group, demonstrating judicial consistency in addressing the gang's collective offending.

The police praised the victim's perseverance, with Detective Chief Inspector Alan Weekes noting the case's sensitivity. The victim aimed to inspire others to report abuse. This was covered in Yorkshire Live's July 2, 2022 report on the Keighley grooming gang.
