Full Description

A depraved man from Atherton has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for historic child sex offences after grooming and abusing young victims. Norman Williams, aged 59, targeted vulnerable children, using gifts such as cigarettes, alcohol, and money to gain their trust before subjecting them to sexual abuse.

The offences spanned a four-year period, during which Williams groomed two victims when they were approximately 12 years old. He went on to sexually abuse them repeatedly, with a third victim also falling prey to his predatory behaviour. The abuse included acts of rape and indecent assault, leaving lasting trauma on the young individuals involved.

Following a trial at Bolton Crown Court, Williams was found guilty of ten counts of indecent assault, six offences of rape, and one offence of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The sentencing took place on 26 June 2024, marking a significant step towards justice for the victims. Detective Constable Chris Waddicar of Greater Manchester Police’s Major Incident Team commended the victims' courage in coming forward, stating, “Williams’ offending was depraved – he picked on vulnerable young children who were unable to defend themselves.”

The investigation by Greater Manchester Police highlighted the importance of reporting such crimes, no matter how long ago they occurred. Williams' actions demonstrated a pattern of exploitation, preying on the innocence and vulnerability of children in his community. This case serves as a stark reminder of the long-term impact of child sexual abuse and the commitment of law enforcement to pursue perpetrators.
