Full Description

A man has been convicted of raping a woman in a park area in Brighton. Alieu George, aged 45 and of no fixed address, was found guilty of rape and sexual assault by penetration following a trial at Hove Crown Court.

The incident occurred on Sunday, June 22, at approximately 9.05am in the Dorset Gardens area of Brighton. The court heard that members of the public spotted George and the victim together, with the woman appearing distressed. Shortly afterwards, witnesses observed them on the ground with George lying on top of her. Three members of the public recognised the victim's distress and promptly called the police.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the 34-year-old woman distraught and George lying next to her. George falsely claimed to the police that the woman was his girlfriend. The victim recounted to officers that she had been out for drinks after work when George approached her, made excuses to separate her from her group, and led her to Dorset Gardens. There, he made repeated attempts to sexually assault her before raping her.

George was arrested on suspicion of rape at the scene and taken into custody. He was charged with the offences later that day. Despite denying the charges, a jury convicted him on Wednesday, December 17. Following the guilty verdicts, George was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear for sentencing on March 10, 2026.

Detective Constable Daisy Alden, the officer in the case from Sussex Police, commended the victim's courage and determination throughout the investigation. She also thanked the three witnesses for their quick action in calling 999, which enabled the swift arrest of the suspect. Alden stated: "Alieu George preyed on the victim and he presents a clear danger to women. The streets of Brighton and Sussex are safer now he will remain behind bars." The case underscores Sussex Police's commitment to tackling sexual offences and male violence against women.
