Offence Summary

Manaf Hussain was jailed for life after snatching a five-year-old girl from her bed, raping and sexually assaulting her, and threatening her and her sister to remain silent about the abuse.

Full Description

In a harrowing case that shocked the community, Manaf Hussain, a 33-year-old man from Carriage Way in Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire, was sentenced to life imprisonment at Leeds Crown Court for the rape and sexual assault of a five-year-old girl. The incident occurred in September 2006, when Hussain, who had previously befriended the victim's mother, exploited his familiarity with the family to gain access to their home undetected.

The court heard disturbing details of how Hussain entered the family's residence one night and silently took the young girl from her bed. He then subjected her to rape and sexual abuse before returning her to her room. To ensure silence, Hussain threatened both the victim and her elder sister, even resorting to cutting the older girl on the chest with a knife as a means of intimidation. This act of terror left the family in fear and highlighted the predatory nature of the offence.

Presiding over the case, the Recorder of Leeds, Judge Peter Collier QC, described Hussain as a continuing danger to children following his conviction by a jury on charges including rape, sexual assault, kidnap, and perverting the course of justice. The judge emphasised the severity of the crimes, noting Hussain's prior conviction for rape in 1992, where he had attacked a girl in an alleyway. This history underscored the offender's pattern of violent sexual behaviour.

  • Hussain befriended the victim's mother to gain trust.
  • Abducted the child without detection in September 2006.
  • Committed rape and sexual assault on the five-year-old.
  • Threatened the sisters and used a knife to enforce silence.

Hussain must serve a minimum of 10 years before he can be considered for release, and only then if the Parole Board deems him no longer a danger to the public. The case was reported by Yorkshire Live, drawing from court proceedings at Leeds Crown Court, and serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities within communities and the importance of vigilance against child predators. Sources confirm the sentencing took place in 2013, with the full implications of the life term ensuring long-term protection for society.
