Gareth Humphreys, a 75-year-old retired police officer from Bridgend, Wales, was involved in a disturbing case of child sexual exploitation. As a former employee of South Wales Police for 30 years and later the Ministry of Defence for six years, Humphreys abused his position of trust by capturing and retaining hundreds of indecent images of a young girl under the age of 13.
The case came to light when the victim confided in her friends, prompting police involvement. Investigations revealed that Humphreys possessed more than 5,000 category C indecent images of children across four electronic devices, including laptops and phones. Of these, 700 unique images and videos specifically depicted the victim in various states of undress. Despite the victim's pleas for him to delete the images, Humphreys refused and continued to hold onto them. His internet search history included incriminating terms such as 'older men strip young girls', further evidencing his sexual motivation.
During the abuse, Humphreys manipulated the victim by telling her not to trust authority figures, particularly police officers, claiming they would not believe her. This tactic was designed to prevent her from reporting the exploitation. Following his arrest, Humphreys initially dismissed the photos as 'innocuous', but he later pleaded guilty to four counts of making indecent images of children at Newport Crown Court.
The court heard from the victim's mother, who read her own victim personal statement, describing the profound impact on her daughter: 'She wanted to kill herself. She feels guilty and dirty for not stopping him. She's still only a child and didn't know any different. I can't get the images or photos I have seen out of my head. I wake up with nightmares, screaming and crying which is extremely frightening for my children. He's taken her childhood away and took her away from her family.' In mitigation, defence counsel Hashim Salmman highlighted Humphreys' previous good character, his long service in public roles, his three adult children, and his poor physical health, noting a realistic prospect of rehabilitation. Sentencing Recorder Aidan Eardley KC remarked: 'I have no doubt your motivation was sexual. You concealed what you were doing. You told her not to trust authority figures and dissuaded her from reporting concerns she had.' Humphreys received a 24-month imprisonment sentence, suspended for 24 months, along with a 25-day rehabilitation activity requirement, sex offender notification requirements, a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and a restraining order for 10 years. The hearing took place at Newport Crown Court in Wales, under the jurisdiction of South Wales Police.
