Full Description

A predatory man from Southampton has been jailed for seven and a half years after luring a woman into his van and subjecting her to repeated rapes. Shafiullah Zahid, 33, of Sirdar Road, approached the victim who was alone following a night out in the city centre. Offering her a lift home, Zahid instead drove her to an unknown location where he attacked her inside his vehicle.

Southampton Crown Court heard details of the harrowing incident during the trial. The prosecution outlined how Zahid's actions demonstrated a complete disregard for the woman's safety and autonomy. Despite pleading not guilty to two charges of rape, Zahid was found guilty by the jury after a thorough examination of the evidence.

Detective Constable Sue Hampton, from Hampshire Constabulary, commended the victim's bravery in reporting the crime. In a statement following the sentencing, she described Zahid's behaviour as predatory and emphasised the force's commitment to pursuing such offenders. 'From the start, Zahid completely disregarded his crime and at no point has he considered the impact he has had on this woman,' DC Hampton said.

The case underscores the dangers faced by individuals in vulnerable situations after social outings, highlighting the importance of community awareness and swift police response. Zahid's conviction serves as a stark reminder of the consequences for those who perpetrate sexual violence.
