Full Description

Mohammed Sadiq, an 81-year-old mosque teacher from Lake Road East, Cyncoed, Cardiff, was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court in July 2017 to 13 years, later reduced to nine on appeal, for six counts of indecent assault and eight of sexual assault against four young girls during Koran lessons at Madina Mosque in Cathays between 1996 and 2006. He exploited his position of trust over 30 years of teaching to assault the victims while they read to him.

Prosecutor Suzanne Thomas outlined how Sadiq 'took advantage of his position'. Judge Stephen Hopkins QC noted Sadiq's lack of remorse and understanding of the 'harm and humiliation' inflicted. The trial exposed institutional vulnerabilities in religious settings.

Wales Online covered the case, framing it within the rising tide of sex offenders in Wales, with 4,700 registered by March 2018 according to Ministry of Justice statistics.
