Offence Summary

Saffian Liaqat, a convicted sex offender from Peterborough, was jailed for one year after breaching his sexual harm prevention order by possessing and using an internet-enabled phone without informing police.

Full Description

Saffian Liaqat, a 31-year-old convicted sex offender residing in Longthorpe, Peterborough, was sentenced to one year in prison for violating the terms of his sexual harm prevention order (SHPO). The breach occurred when specialist officers from Cambridgeshire Police visited his home in August 2024 as part of routine community management.

Under the strict conditions of his SHPO, Liaqat was prohibited from using or owning any device capable of accessing the internet or storing digital images without prior police approval. The order also required him to surrender such devices upon request. During the visit, Liaqat claimed he had lost his permitted basic non-internet device. However, officers discovered an internet phone hidden on top of a wardrobe in his home.

A subsequent search of the device revealed that Liaqat had been accessing various social media platforms, directly contravening the order's restrictions. Following the discovery, Liaqat was arrested and later pleaded guilty to breaching the SHPO at Huntingdon Law Courts.

The sentencing took place on 23 January 2026, where Judge [name not specified] imposed a one-year custodial sentence. Detective Constable Claire Cummings, from the Management of Sexual or Violent Offenders Unit (MOSOVO) at Cambridgeshire Police, commented on the case: "Liaqat showed a complete disregard for his sexual harm prevention order and notification requirements, which are in place to safeguard the public. These new convictions reflect the serious sexual risk of harm he poses." She further emphasised the unit's commitment to monitoring registered sex offenders, stating: "Our specialist officers work tirelessly to monitor and manage all registered sex offenders in the community and won’t hesitate to put them back before the courts if they discover any breaches."

This incident underscores the ongoing efforts by Cambridgeshire Police to enforce protective measures against individuals with prior sexual convictions, ensuring public safety in the Peterborough area. The case was reported by the Peterborough Telegraph, highlighting the importance of compliance with court orders for those under supervision.
