Full Description

Michael Simmonds, a 37-year-old man from Crawley, West Sussex, was jailed for sexually assaulting a young boy and possessing indecent images of children. The incident came to light in June 2025 when a 13-year-old victim reported the assault to police immediately after it occurred in woodland near Crawley.

Officers acted swiftly on the victim's report, locating and arresting Simmonds, who had no fixed abode, shortly afterwards. During the investigation, police seized Simmonds' mobile phone and discovered child abuse material, including Category A and B images. He was charged with sexual assault on 30 June 2025 and initially released on bail.

While on bail, specialist officers obtained a Sexual Risk Order (SRO) against Simmonds, imposing strict conditions on his technology use and requiring management by an offender manager. However, Simmonds breached the SRO soon after by downloading and using unauthorised apps and websites. On 27 October 2025, he faced additional charges for breaching the SRO and taking indecent photographs of children. He further breached his court bail conditions, leading to his remand into custody.

Simmonds appeared at Crawley Magistrates' Court on 18 November 2025, where he pleaded guilty to all offences. His sentencing took place at Lewes Crown Court on 19 January 2026, resulting in a total prison term of three years and two months. Additionally, a Sexual Harm Prevention Order was imposed for ten years to restrict his activities and protect the public.

Detective Sergeant Melanie Pyle, who led part of the investigation for Sussex Police, commended the victim's bravery: 'This was a deeply distressing offence, and I want to commend the exceptional bravery shown by the victim in coming forward so quickly to report what had happened. His courage enabled officers to act quickly and played a crucial role in bringing Simmonds to justice.' The case was reported by The Argus, highlighting the rapid response by Sussex Police in Crawley.
