Arlanzo Sherwood, a 46-year-old man from Basildon, Essex, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison following his conviction for serious child sexual offences. The case, investigated by Essex Police's specialist Quest team, began in July 2019 when a family friend reported allegations of abuse to the authorities. The victim, who was a child at the time of the offences but is now in her 20s, had endured years of trauma before confiding in a friend and then her mother, who confronted Sherwood and promptly reported the matter to the police.
The investigation, which spanned two and a half years, involved detailed enquiries into the harrowing allegations. Sherwood either refused to comment or denied the claims during interviews. He was charged in October 2021 and stood trial at Basildon Crown Court in a nine-day hearing. The jury found him guilty on two counts of assault of a girl by penetration, one count of sexual activity with a child, and one count of voyeurism. He was acquitted on two counts of assault by penetration and one count of sexual activity with a child. In court, the survivor bravely testified about the abuse she suffered at Sherwood's hands, detailing how she had kept the secret for years until she could no longer bear it.
On 26 June 2025, at the same court, HHJ Richard Conley sentenced Sherwood to 11 years' imprisonment for the assault charges, to run concurrently. He received an additional eight years for the sexual activity offence and 18 months for voyeurism, also concurrent with the main term. Sherwood, residing at Clayburn Circle in Basildon, was placed on the sex offenders' register for life and issued with a lifetime Sexual Harm Prevention Order. The judge commended the survivor's bravery, noting the arduous nature of the trial, and praised the professionalism, hard work, and diligence of investigating officer Detective Constable Chris Sedgwick.
Det Con Sedgwick paid tribute to the survivor's incredible fortitude and dignity throughout the process, stating: 'Sherwood committed heinous offences against a vulnerable child and is now rightly serving a long prison sentence.' The survivor expressed her gratitude to Essex Police and her support network, saying: 'This has been hanging over me for a long time, but I’m so grateful to the officers at Essex Police and the friend I confided in, who has supported me throughout. I just want to get on with my life, build some emotional resilience and a future with my family and friends. Securing justice will certainly help me with that.' This case underscores Essex Police's commitment to thoroughly investigating historical child sexual abuse reports and supporting survivors in achieving justice.
