Full Description

Jonathan Quinnell, a 61-year-old man from Orpington, has been found guilty of child sex offences after attempting to groom what he believed to be a 14-year-old girl online. In December 2023, Quinnell, who was residing in Orpington at the time, sent explicit sexual messages to an account he thought belonged to a child, suggesting a meeting where he intended to sexually assault and rape her. Court documents reveal that the messages included graphic descriptions of his intentions, highlighting the predatory nature of his communications.

The account Quinnell was interacting with was not that of a real child but a decoy operated by the group Intervention OCPT, a team of paedophile hunters dedicated to exposing individuals attempting to exploit minors online. On 20 December 2023, the group confronted Quinnell at his home in Orpington following the exchange of messages. This confrontation led to his arrest and subsequent legal proceedings. Quinnell, now residing in Bristol, has professionally described himself on LinkedIn as a psychic, hypnotherapist, life coach, healer, and published author, a stark contrast to the serious allegations against him.

Quinnell pleaded guilty to two charges: attempting to meet a girl under 16 years of age following grooming, and attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child. He appeared at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on 27 October 2024, expecting sentencing. However, due to the gravity of the offences, the magistrates deemed the case too serious for the lower court and committed it to Croydon Crown Court for sentencing at a later date. This decision underscores the severity with which the courts are treating such child sex offences.

The case was reported by News Shopper, with details drawn from court documents and statements related to the investigation by Intervention OCPT. As quoted in the coverage, the explicit nature of Quinnell's messages demonstrated clear intent to commit sexual assault and rape, prompting swift action by the paedophile hunters. No specific police force is named in the reports, but the incident occurred within the jurisdiction typically covered by the Metropolitan Police Service.
