Full Description

A couple from Salisbury, James Owen and Ellen Rea, have been imprisoned for their roles in raping and sexually assaulting an 18-year-old woman. The offences, which took place in early 2021, involved a calculated grooming process that exploited the victim's trust.

James Owen, aged 55 and working as a personal trainer, first sexually assaulted the victim between January and February 2021 during what were supposed to be legitimate training activities. Over several weeks, Owen and his partner Ellen Rea, 52, exchanged text messages with the teenager that explicitly outlined their intentions, demonstrating premeditation. On 6 February 2021, they invited her to their home for dinner, plying her with alcohol to lower her inhibitions. They then persuaded her to join them in a hot tub, where Owen raped the young woman, and Rea carried out a sexual assault against her.

The case proceeded to a nine-day trial at court, where Owen was convicted of one count of rape, two counts of sexual assault, and conspiracy to commit sexual assault. Rea was found guilty of sexual assault and conspiracy to commit sexual assault. Following the verdicts, Owen was sentenced to eight years in prison, while Rea received two years. The sentencing reflects the severity of the abuse of trust and the lasting impact on the victim.

Detective Constable Martyn Powell of Wiltshire Police commented on the case, stating: “James Owen and Ellen Rea conspired to abuse the trust of a young woman. Their horrendous actions were fuelled by their own selfish desires, without for a moment considering the long-lasting consequences that this abuse would have on their victim.” He also praised the victim's bravery: “I would like to pay tribute to the bravery of the young woman who worked with us to help bring these two offenders to justice and hope that she is able to find some solace in the lengthy custodial sentences that have been handed down today.”

This case, reported by Aaron Harper and published on 16 August 2024 via Greatest Hits Radio, underscores the dangers of grooming tactics disguised as professional or social interactions. The full details emerged from court proceedings, highlighting the role of digital evidence like text messages in securing convictions.
