Offence Summary

Gary Grant was convicted of four counts of buggery and three counts of indecent assault against a schoolgirl aged 13 to 15 in the 1990s, though cleared of rape and additional indecent assault charges. He is scheduled to be sentenced on 20 April.

Full Description

A jury at Ipswich Crown Court convicted Gary Grant, a 54-year-old man from Felixstowe, of multiple sexual offences committed against a teenage girl during the late 1990s. The offences occurred between 1996 and 1999, when the victim was aged 13 to 15 and Grant was in his mid-20s.

The court heard that Grant met the girl while she was walking to school. It was alleged that he groomed her by providing cigarettes and alcohol, leading her to skip school and visit his flat. During his trial, Grant claimed he had a year-long consensual relationship with the girl, during which they engaged in sex. He also stated that he had been diagnosed with developmental delay and impaired memory by a clinical psychologist.

Grant was found guilty of four counts of buggery and three counts of indecent assault. However, he was cleared of one count of rape and three additional counts of indecent assault. The prosecution presented evidence of the abusive nature of the relationship, contrasting sharply with Grant's defence of consent.

Sentencing is expected to take place on 20 April at Ipswich Crown Court. The case was reported by the East Anglian Daily Times, with coverage highlighting the grooming tactics employed by Grant.
