Offence Summary

Masaued Malik was jailed for five years for indecent assaults on teenage girls in Rotherham between 1998 and 2002, in addition to his existing 15-year sentence for similar offences.

Full Description

Masaued Malik was sentenced alongside four other men at Sheffield Crown Court for their part in the sexual exploitation of eight teenage girls in Rotherham from 1998 to 2002. This case is linked to Operation Stovewood, the National Crime Agency's probe into widespread child sexual abuse in the area between 1997 and 2013, impacting around 1,510 young people.

Malik, aged 35, was convicted of indecent assault after targeting vulnerable girls with alcohol and drugs, leading to their abuse. He received a five-year custodial sentence, to be served consecutively to a 15-year term he was already serving for comparable offences. Judge Michael Slater criticised the historical inaction by authorities, who were aware of the targeting of vulnerable teenagers but failed to intervene, labelling it 'totally ineffectual' at best.

The sentencing recognised the victims' bravery, with one present in court and another submitting an impact statement. The judge praised their determination to prevent future abuses. Ch Supt Una Jennings of South Yorkshire Police remarked: 'The sentences handed out today will never make up for the abuse these girls suffered, but I hope that it does go some way to help them move forward.' Malik's conviction contributes to the ongoing pursuit of justice in the Rotherham exploitation cases.
