Full Description

A 51-year-old man from Kendal has been sentenced for possessing and distributing indecent images of children, following a police investigation that uncovered illegal material on his devices.

Paul David German, residing on Kendal Parks Road in Kendal, Cumbria, engaged in a period of offending between July last year and January this year. During this time, he downloaded hundreds of indecent photographs of children and distributed six child pornography images. The offences came to light when police officers visited his home and seized electronic devices, which were found to contain 281 indecent images. Among these, three were classified as category A—the most severe level—four as category B, and 274 as category C.

German pleaded guilty at Carlisle Crown Court to charges of making and possessing the indecent photographs, as well as distribution. The court heard details of the material during the hearing, where Recorder Ciaran Rankin considered background information and mitigation before passing sentence. Rather than immediate custody, German received a three-year community order, requiring him to complete up to 50 days of rehabilitation activity and a dedicated sex offender treatment course.

  • Distribution of six indecent images of children
  • Possession of 281 indecent photographs, categorised as 3 A, 4 B, and 274 C
  • Offending period: July [previous year] to January [current year]

In addition to the community order, German was made subject to a sexual harm prevention order and required to sign the sex offenders' register, both lasting for five years. The sentencing reflects the court's assessment of the case, with the judge emphasising the need for rehabilitation and monitoring to prevent further harm. This case was reported by The Westmorland Gazette, highlighting ongoing efforts by Cumbria Police to combat online child sex crimes.
