Offence Summary

Jonathan McNeill, a former West Midlands Police officer, downloaded and stored hundreds of indecent images and videos of children, leading to his arrest and conviction.

Full Description

Jonathan McNeill, a 55-year-old former police officer with West Midlands Police, has been jailed for possessing a large collection of indecent images of children. McNeill, residing on Lavender Avenue in Coventry, was arrested in June 2019 following an investigation into his online activities. Authorities discovered that he had downloaded and stored 497 still and moving images depicting child sexual abuse from the internet.

McNeill admitted to three charges of making indecent images of children during a hearing at Wolverhampton Crown Court. The court heard how police recovered the explicit material from his phone and computer devices. In sentencing, the judge imposed a 15-month custodial term on McNeill, who had taken early retirement from the force in December 2019 amid the unfolding scandal. Additionally, he was placed on the sex offenders register for a period of 10 years to monitor his activities post-release.

The case has drawn significant attention due to McNeill's position of trust within law enforcement. West Midlands Police acted swiftly upon discovering the evidence, leading to his suspension and subsequent retirement. The West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner has since initiated a review of the matter, with plans to approach the Home Office regarding the potential withholding of McNeill's police pension. This development underscores the force's commitment to upholding integrity among its ranks, as stated in official communications from the organisation.

According to reports from the BBC and court records from HM Courts & Tribunals Service, the images varied in severity, highlighting the gravity of the offences. No specific quotes from the trial proceedings were detailed in public sources, but the prosecution emphasised the betrayal of public trust inherent in McNeill's actions as a serving officer. The investigation was conducted by West Midlands Police, who confirmed the recovery of the digital evidence during a search of McNeill's home.
