Full Description

A 74-year-old man from Wakefield has been imprisoned for a series of historical child sexual offences committed over several years. Peter Woolner, residing on Fairway in Normanton, was convicted following a thorough investigation into allegations spanning from 2001 to 2007.

The offences came to light in 2021 when the victim, who was between eight and 14 years old at the time of the abuse, bravely reported the incidents to the police. Woolner was promptly arrested and questioned. Despite his continued denials, the case proceeded to trial at Leeds Crown Court in April 2025, where a jury found him guilty on multiple counts.

  • Two counts of indecency with a child
  • Two counts of indecent assault
  • Three counts of possession of indecent images of a child

On 30 May 2025, Woolner was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment. In addition, he received a Sexual Harm Prevention Order to restrict his future behaviour and protect the public.

Detective Inspector Mark Tester from the Leeds District Safeguarding Unit commended the victim's courage, stating: 'I want to praise the victim for her courage in coming forward to report the horrific abuse she was subjected to. Peter Woolner targeted a vulnerable child and it is right that he is now behind bars for his crimes. I hope his sentencing provides some sense of justice for the victim and allows her to begin to move forward with her life.' The investigation was described as complex and lengthy, highlighting the challenges in prosecuting non-recent sexual offences.

This case underscores the importance of reporting such crimes, no matter how much time has passed. Woolner, who showed no remorse during the proceedings, will serve his sentence in a custodial facility, ensuring accountability for his actions against a vulnerable child.
