Full Description

John-Paul Zegstroo, a 28-year-old resident of Scarborough, has been sentenced to 21 years in prison for a series of grave sexual offences against a child. The case, heard at York Crown Court, involved Zegstroo filming himself committing rape on a child, an act that profoundly impacted the victim's natural development. Zegstroo was convicted by a jury on two counts of rape, three counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, one count of sexual assault, and two counts related to indecent images of children.

The court proceedings revealed Zegstroo's deliberate attempts to obstruct justice. On the day his trial was scheduled to begin, he presented himself at York Hospital, claiming illness despite being in perfect health. Medical staff examined him thoroughly and issued a clean bill of health, delaying the trial by one day. Undeterred, in the early hours of the following day, Zegstroo went to Scarborough Hospital in what Judge Simon Hickey described as a 'clear attempt to avoid trial again.' Officers were waiting for him this time, and he was arrested immediately and brought to court.

Judge Hickey characterised Zegstroo's crimes as 'extremely serious offending' and highlighted his deceitful character during sentencing. 'How you tried to delay justice by pretending you were ill when you were not shows your character,' the judge stated. Zegstroo had also lied consistently throughout the court process, providing conflicting stories to medical experts assessing his mental state and to the probation officer. In addition to the 21-year custodial sentence, Zegstroo was placed on the sex offenders' register for life and made subject to a sexual harm prevention order to restrict future contact with children, also for life.

Defence representative Gillian Shepherd referenced the probation report, noting Zegstroo's claimed remorse and shame. However, Detective Constable Laura Carroll of North Yorkshire Police dismissed this, stating after the hearing: 'He has shown absolutely no remorse or acceptance of his crimes.' Carroll emphasised that Zegstroo would now face long-term imprisonment with his movements closely monitored by authorities for the rest of his life. The case was reported by The Gazette & Herald, with court reporting by Megi Rychlikova.
