Offence Summary

Anthony Shenton, a former teacher at Langleybury School, sexually assaulted nine boys aged between 11 and 15 during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. He was jailed for 15 years in 2021 following a trial at St Albans Crown Court.

Full Description

Anthony Shenton, a design technology and games teacher at the former Langleybury School in Hunton Bridge, Abbots Langley, Hertfordshire, carried out a series of sexual assaults against pupils over several decades. His offending took place primarily in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, targeting boys aged between 11 and 15. The abuse occurred at various locations, including Shenton's flat in Abbots Langley, an apartment within the school grounds, during after-school clubs, and on school-organised canoeing and skiing trips.

The impact of Shenton's actions was profound, with some victims experiencing interference in their academic achievements and others contemplating suicide as a result of the trauma. In 2021, at the age of 82, Shenton was brought to justice after a four-day trial at St Albans Crown Court. He was convicted of sexually assaulting nine boys and sentenced to 15 years in prison by Her Honour Judge Caroline Wiggin.

During the sentencing, Judge Wiggin described Shenton, then residing at Church Lane in Aldenham, as "calculating and predatory". She commended the bravery of the victims and acknowledged the significant and lasting effects of his crimes on their lives. The case was investigated by Hertfordshire Police, with images of Shenton provided by the force.

Following his conviction, the national law firm Bolt Burdon Kemp announced it was representing clients pursuing civil claims against Hertfordshire County Council in connection with Shenton's abuse. Solicitor Elise Carnot issued an appeal for additional witnesses and potential victims to come forward, stating: "I am appealing for witnesses on behalf of my clients who may be able to assist with our investigations. It is also possible there are more victims who have not yet felt able to come forward and speak about their abuse." The firm emphasised that it was too early to provide details on the progress of the claims, and Hertfordshire County Council was contacted for comment but had not responded at the time of reporting.

The article, published by the Watford Observer, highlights the ongoing pursuit of justice for Shenton's victims, underscoring the long-term repercussions of institutional failures in safeguarding children from predatory behaviour within educational settings.
