Full Description

Arthur Warwick, a former resident of Penrith in Cumbria, was convicted of a series of horrific child sex crimes that spanned multiple victims. In 2016, he admitted to 29 offences against four children, comprising five rapes of children as young as nine and numerous sexual assaults. One particularly disturbing aspect of his abuse involved coercing a victim by promising to stop the assaults if the child found another boy to replace him.

Warwick's criminal activities were uncovered through a sting operation conducted by Cumbria Police. He travelled to Whitehaven under the belief that he was meeting a 13-year-old boy he had groomed online. In reality, the contact was an undercover police officer, leading to his immediate arrest. A subsequent search of his home revealed 20 indecent images of children on his computer equipment, with a third classified as Category A, the most severe category.

At Carlisle Crown Court, Judge James Cartlidge imposed a life sentence on Warwick, stipulating a minimum term of 13 years before he could be eligible for parole. Detective Chief Inspector David Pattinson of Cumbria Police commended the bravery of the victims—three boys and one girl—stating, "Without their help and trust in the police, Warwick would be free to continue with his despicable lifestyle sexually abusing young children." He further noted that the sentencing provided closure for the victims and made Cumbria a safer place by incarcerating such a predator.

Warwick, aged 67 at the time of his death, was serving his sentence at HMP Frankland, a high-security Category A prison in Brasside, County Durham. He passed away on Christmas Day, and the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has initiated a routine investigation into the circumstances of his death in custody. No further details have been released regarding the cause.
