Offence Summary

Matthew Cabral, a 35-year-old serviceman from Taunton, was jailed for 27 months after pleading guilty to making, taking, and distributing indecent photographs of children, as well as possessing extreme pornographic images involving adults and animals.

Full Description

Matthew Cabral, a 35-year-old serviceman based at Kinloss Barracks in Scotland, appeared at Inverness Sheriff Court on 24 March 2026 for sentencing following his guilty pleas in February to serious sexual offences.

Between 16 November 2018 and 15 January 2022, Cabral engaged in the making and taking of indecent photographs of children, distributed such material, and possessed extreme pornographic images depicting adults engaging in sexual activity with animals, including dogs, horses, and a dolphin. The court heard that he admitted to downloading and distributing the graphic content, as reported by Grampian Online.

Sheriff Gary Aitken sentenced Cabral to 24 months in prison for the indecent images offences, with an additional three months consecutively for failing to appear at a prior court hearing, resulting in a total of 27 months' imprisonment. The sentence was backdated to 10 December 2025. Furthermore, Cabral was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for ten years.

The Somerset County Gazette understands that Cabral, originally from Taunton in Somerset, is now in custody with the Scottish Prison Service rather than a military facility. This case highlights the severe consequences for individuals involved in child sexual exploitation and possession of extreme imagery within the UK armed forces community.
