Full Description

Philip Overton, a 26-year-old man from Hampshire, was sentenced at Winchester Crown Court for possessing and making indecent images of children. The offences occurred between 26 November 2019 and 29 April 2020, during which time Overton accumulated more than 800 such images on his devices.

Police attended Overton's former address at Broad Chalke Down, Badger Farm, in October 2020, where they seized a Dell laptop and an iPhone. Examination of the devices revealed 510 category A images—the most serious classification—242 category B images, and 51 category C images. Of the total 803 images, 627 were moving images, with the longest clip lasting 18 minutes and depicting children aged between four and 13 years old. The court heard that the images had been shared in a Skype chat, as detailed by Ben Thompson, prosecuting, who stated: "Every child suffers harm every time a pornographic image of them is shared."

Overton, who is now of no fixed abode after providing police with his family's former address, also pleaded guilty to giving a false address to officers. Annabel Hazlitt, mitigating, addressed the court, noting Overton's remorse and personal struggles. She said: "It has been four years since the police knocked on his door. He is very remorseful of what he has done. He took sexual gratification in what he was doing which made him physically sick. He was deeply struggling with his own sexuality, which isn't an excuse, but he is coming to terms with what he did." Hazlitt further highlighted that Overton had ceased offending independently four years prior and planned to relocate to Exeter to train as an HGV driver through a government scheme.

Judge Nigel Lickley KC imposed a 20-month custodial sentence, suspended for two years, along with 60 days of rehabilitation activity and 100 hours of unpaid work. Overton was also made subject to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order, and his seized devices were ordered to be destroyed. The judge warned: "If you don't comply, you will be brought back here and sentenced again." The case was heard on Friday, 9 August, at Winchester Crown Court in Hampshire, England.
