Offence Summary

Rhys Long, a 19-year-old from Llandovery, admitted to making and distributing indecent images of children, including 40 Category A images, and possessing extreme pornographic images depicting bestiality.

Full Description

A teenager from Llandovery has been committed to Swansea Crown Court for sentencing after pleading guilty to serious sexual offences involving indecent images of children. Rhys Long, aged 19 and residing in Cynghordy, Llandovery, appeared at Llanelli Magistrates’ Court on March 25, where he indicated his guilty pleas to multiple charges related to the creation, possession, and distribution of prohibited materials.

The offences spanned from January 1, 2016, to November 28, 2019, all occurring in Llandovery. Long admitted to making 40 Category A indecent photographs—the most severe classification—21 Category B indecent photographs, and 101 Category C indecent photographs. Additionally, he confessed to distributing 45 Category C indecent photographs on October 29 and another 45 on November 22, both instances in Llandovery. He also pleaded guilty to possessing 25 extreme pornographic images depicting bestiality on November 28 in Llandovery.

Following his admissions, Long was remanded on unconditional bail and is scheduled to appear before Swansea Crown Court on April 16 for sentencing. As required under the Sexual Offences Act 2003, he must register with the police upon conviction. The case was reported by the South Wales Guardian, highlighting the gravity of child sexual exploitation offences in the region. Dyfed-Powys Police, the prosecuting force, have not released further details on the investigation, but the commitments underscore the court's recognition that such matters exceed the jurisdiction of magistrates for sentencing.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat the production and spread of child abuse imagery online. Long's actions, spanning several years during his teenage period, involved extreme content that has profound implications for victims and the community.
