James Hawker, a 45-year-old man from Felixstowe, Suffolk, has been found guilty of a series of serious child sex offences following a trial at Ipswich Crown Court. The convictions, handed down by a jury, encompass 11 counts of sexual assault, four counts of rape, one count of attempted rape, and four counts of assault by penetration, all perpetrated against children between 2008 and 2020. Hawker, residing on Cornwall Road in Felixstowe, had denied all charges but was unanimously convicted on every count.
During the trial, the prosecution, led by Marc Brown, presented compelling evidence including Hawker's own admissions to possessing a vast collection of 21,242 indecent images of children, some of which depicted girls he was accused of abusing. Brown highlighted specific incidents, such as Hawker allegedly placing his hand inside a girl's swimming costume and touching her intimately at a swimming pool, as well as stripping another victim in a cornfield, photographing her, and instructing her to remain silent to avoid his own trouble. These acts underscored the predatory nature of the offences, which spanned over a decade and involved multiple young victims.
Hawker took the stand in his defence, attempting to downplay the severity of his actions. He accused the victims of colluding to fabricate the allegations against him, claiming they had 'put their heads together'. Regarding his collection of indecent images, Hawker admitted to setting up a covert camera to film children undressing but insisted he was in a 'bad place' at the time, with his interest in adult pornography having 'spiralled downhill'. He expressed no pride in his behaviour but likened his collection to innocuous hobbies, such as collecting football cards or artists painting nudes, denying any sexual excitement from the child images. Despite acknowledging a photograph on his computer showing him touching a schoolgirl inappropriately, Hawker vehemently rejected being labelled a paedophile or someone who committed serious sex offences against children.
The jury, however, rejected Hawker's account, convicting him on all 20 charges. The case was heard at Ipswich Crown Court, with reporting by Jane Hunt for the East Anglian Daily Times (eadt.co.uk). Hawker faces a lengthy custodial sentence, to be imposed on 12 December 2024, reflecting the gravity of the child sex offences and his prior admissions to related indecent activities.
