A 48-year-old man from Llandovery, Phillip Andrew Williams, has been sentenced to an extended 30-year term following a brutal 12-hour attack on a teenage girl in August 2022. The incident, which involved abduction, rape, and multiple sexual offences, unfolded in the Llandovery area and extended to Margam Country Park, highlighting a grave case of sexual violence and exploitation.
On the night of 2 August 2022, Williams abducted the teenager, stole her mobile phone, and held a screwdriver to her neck to coerce her compliance. He forced her to consume alcohol and cocaine before tying her hands with blue rope and raping her in a nearby field. Evidence later recovered from the scene included the victim's trainers and underwear, the screwdriver, and the rope, all submerged in mud, corroborating her account. Williams then dragged the victim into a stolen vehicle, where he physically assaulted her again while driving under the influence to Margam Country Park. There, he attempted to drag her towards a mountain, but the victim managed to retrieve her phone and flee, alerting police on the morning of 3 August 2022.
Officers from Dyfed-Powys Police and South Wales Police responded swiftly, finding the victim in a distressed state covered in mud. Her disclosure led to the rapid identification of the crime scene and the initiation of a manhunt. Williams was located and arrested within hours, charged just 36 hours later with offences including inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, three counts of rape of a female, kidnapping, and sexual assault of a female under 16 years. Despite overwhelming evidence, Williams pleaded not guilty, necessitating a five-day trial at Swansea Crown Court starting 23 January 2023. The jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts on all charges after just 40 minutes of deliberation.
Senior Investigating Officer DI Dale Thomas commended the victim's bravery, stating: 'Williams somehow thought he could get away with what he did but thanks to the efforts of the investigating team and the bravery of the victim... I would like to commend the victim for the bravery she has shown throughout the investigation. I hope this reassures people that Dyfed-Powys Police will not tolerate such terrible crimes and gives anyone who has been attacked like this the confidence to come forward.' The officer in the case, DC Jade Probert, provided comprehensive support to the victim, ensuring she did not need to testify in court. Williams was sentenced on 22 February 2023 at Swansea Crown Court to 22 years' custody, extended by 8 years on licence, reflecting the severity of the child sex offences and violence involved. This case, reported by Dyfed-Powys Police, underscores the force's commitment to pursuing justice in sexual exploitation cases.
