In a disturbing case heard at Hull Crown Court, 18-year-old Kai Hutchinson from east Hull was sentenced for grooming and sexually exploiting four young girls via social media. Described as manipulative and controlling, Hutchinson targeted vulnerable minors on platforms such as Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook, leading to serious psychological harm for his victims.
Hutchinson, residing on Pembroke Grove off Preston Road, admitted to five counts of sexual activity with a child and three counts of sexual communication with a child. The court heard details from prosecutor David Godfrey about how Hutchinson initiated contact with the first victim, a 14-year-old girl, on Snapchat. Aware of her age, he chatted with her for about a month before meeting in person, resulting in sexual intercourse at least 10 times. The girl felt pressured into the acts and described Hutchinson as 'a bit controlling'. He also exchanged intimate images with her, requesting explicit photos which she provided. The relationship eventually ended, but not before causing lasting impact.
The second victim, aged 12, was contacted via Instagram. Contact quickly turned explicit, with Hutchinson sending intimate pictures and bombarding her with messages demanding explicit images in return. She refused and confided in her mother, halting the interaction. The third victim, 13, connected with Hutchinson on Facebook. They met multiple times, engaging in sex on at least 10 occasions in what she described as a 'toxic' relationship. Hutchinson manipulated her into sexual activity, exploiting her reluctance to upset him. The fourth victim, also 14, was approached on Snapchat. Hutchinson sent her intimate images and persisted despite her age, though she did not reciprocate with any images. The victims' statements, as presented in court, highlighted the profound effects of Hutchinson's actions. The first girl noted difficulties in her subsequent relationship, struggling with depression and reluctance to leave bed. The second expressed feeling 'empty, low, and anxious', with concentration issues at school. The third described her life as irrevocably changed, suffering loss of appetite, constant rumination, and public anxiety. No statement was provided from the fourth girl.
Mitigating, Dale Brook emphasised Hutchinson's lack of prior convictions and immaturity, assessing him as a low risk of reoffending. He acknowledged the offences as 'very serious' and 'wholly inappropriate and illegal', even within what appeared as consensual but toxic dynamics. There was manipulation but no overt threats. Recorder of Hull Paul Batty imposed the sentence, locking Hutchinson up for four years and 10 months in a young offenders' institution.
The case was investigated by Humberside Police, with the sentencing reported by Hull Live on 6 April 2023. Additional measures include an indefinite sexual harm prevention order and lifelong registration as a sex offender.
