A 20-year-old nursery worker from Hemel Hempstead has appeared in court accused of serious child sexual offences. Zara Lancashire, of Datchworth Turn, faced charges at St Albans Crown Court on 15 October 2024, marking a significant development in a case that has shocked the local community.
Lancashire, who was employed at Flower Pots Nursery in Hempstead Road, Kings Langley, was arrested on 15 September 2024 and formally charged two days later on 17 September 2024. The charges include one count of sexual assault of a child under 13, three counts of distributing indecent images of a child, three counts of making indecent images of a child, and four counts of publishing an obscene article via a chat application. During the hearing at 2pm, Lancashire made no plea, and no date has yet been set for her next court appearance. Following an earlier appearance at Hatfield Magistrates’ Court on the day of her charge, she was remanded in custody.
The case came to light after Hertfordshire Constabulary investigated allegations of serious offences involving children. Flower Pots Nursery confirmed the arrest of one of its staff members in a statement released on 18 September 2024. A spokesperson for the nursery said: “We do understand that this must be worrying and upsetting for our families, and our designated safeguarding leads are available to meet with parents wherever and whenever this will help. People who know us know that the safety and welfare of the children in our care has always been our highest priority and we are also absolutely committed to ensuring that our parents also receive our fullest possible support during this difficult time.” The nursery, located in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire, emphasised its commitment to child safety amid the unfolding investigation.
At the time of her arrest, Lancashire was 20 years old and resided in Hemel Hempstead. The offences are alleged to involve the distribution and creation of indecent images, as well as direct sexual assault, highlighting grave concerns over child protection in educational settings. The case is being heard at St Albans Crown Court, with further proceedings pending. This incident has prompted discussions on safeguarding measures in nurseries across Hertfordshire.
