Offence Summary

Suaiel Riaz Haider groomed, raped, and indecently assaulted a 15-year-old girl in the early 2000s, leading to his conviction and sentencing to 14 years in prison.

Full Description

Suaiel Riaz Haider, born on 11 August 1981 and residing on Mosley Avenue in Bury, was sentenced on 7 July 2025 at Manchester Crown Court to 14 years' imprisonment for serious sexual offences committed against a teenage girl in the early 2000s. The case stemmed from a complex retrospective investigation initiated by Greater Manchester Police's Bury Complex Safeguarding Team after the survivor courageously reported the abuse in 2021. Haider, who was 19 at the time of the offences, met the victim when she was just 15 years old in 2000.

The abuse began with grooming tactics, where Haider provided the girl with lifts from school, food, cigarettes, and alcohol to gain her trust. This manipulative relationship quickly escalated into sexual exploitation. He made derogatory comments towards her, which progressed to physical sexual offences, including two counts of rape of a girl under the age of 16 and four counts of indecent assault. The offences occurred over a period in the early 2000s, with the investigation uncovering details from as far back as a quarter of a century ago.

Detectives worked closely with the survivor to record video statements, pinpoint specific details, and gather evidence to build a robust case. Despite Haider pleading not guilty and denying all allegations throughout a two-week trial, a unanimous jury found him guilty on 13 June 2025. In addition to his custodial sentence, Haider must comply with a lifelong sexual harm protection order and has been placed on the sex offenders' register for life.

Detective Sergeant Sarah Beale of the Bury Complex Safeguarding Team commended the survivor's bravery, stating: 'The strength and courage of this survivor demonstrated while supporting our investigation and subsequent legal proceedings is commendable. It was incredibly brave of her to speak about the abuse, and this played a crucial role in ensuring Haider couldn’t get away with his crimes any longer and faced justice.' This case highlights ongoing efforts by Greater Manchester Police to address child sexual exploitation, providing reassurance that historical abuses will be thoroughly investigated.
