Offence Summary

Anthony Redmond, a former geography teacher at a Catholic school in Plymouth, was jailed for sexually abusing two teenage girls in the 2000s by exploiting his position of trust, including acts of full sex, oral sex, and digital penetration at various locations such as school premises and a hotel.

Full Description

Anthony Redmond, a former teacher at Notre Dame Catholic School in Plymouth, was convicted of multiple sexual offences against two teenage girls during the 2000s. The 54-year-old, who was in his late 20s at the time of the crimes, abused his position of trust as a geography teacher to groom and violate the victims, both of whom were students under 18.

The offences, which took place over several years, occurred at various locations including Redmond's home, school premises, a hotel, and another unspecified site. Specific incidents included performing oral sex on one victim in a school cupboard and digitally penetrating the second victim in the school staffroom. Redmond engaged in full sexual intercourse with both girls, taking their virginity and leaving them feeling used and worthless. One victim described how Redmond flirted with her, whispered in her ear, and took her on trips to McDonald's to make her feel special before escalating to sexual acts, including at a hotel when she was 16.

  • Five counts of abuse of a position of trust by engaging in sexual activity with the first girl aged under 18.
  • Two counts of abuse of a position of trust by engaging in sexual activity with the second girl.
  • One count of indecency with a child at a hotel.

Redmond pleaded not guilty and stood trial at Plymouth Crown Court, which began in December 2025 and concluded in January 2026. The jury heard victim impact statements detailing the lifelong damage caused. One victim stated: "He took advantage of my naivety and young age" and described Redmond as a "sick and twisted" man who groomed her for his own sexual gratification. The other, now a mother, said: "The damage Redmond caused me would last a lifetime" and accused him of playing with her innocence and vulnerability.

In his pre-sentence report, Redmond minimised his behaviour, claiming it occurred in a "different culture" and generation when such legislation was new. Prosecutor Kelly Scrivener refuted this, stating: "He's wrong about that. It was, as he's very much found out, illegal, even back then, what he was doing to these young students." The report also noted evidence of victim blaming. In mitigation, advocate Ali Rafati highlighted Redmond's lack of previous convictions, his role as a married father of two, and the historic nature of the offences, arguing they were situational to the school environment.

On 10 February 2026, Judge Robert Linford sentenced Redmond to three years and nine months in prison at Plymouth Crown Court, following an investigation by Devon and Cornwall Police. He will serve half the sentence before potential release on licence and was placed on the Sex Offenders Register, subjected to a 20-year restraining order against contacting the victims, and barred from working with children. The case, reported by Plymouth Live and summarised by Derbyshire Live, underscored the betrayal of trust in an all-girls Catholic school where other staff allegedly turned a blind eye.
