Full Description

James Andrew Swindlehurst, a 43-year-old resident of Rockingham Street, Honeywell, Barnsley, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for committing horrific sexual offences against two vulnerable young children. The abuses, which included 13 counts of non-recent rape and indecent assault, occurred over a five-year period during the 1990s and 2000s. Swindlehurst targeted the children by exploiting their vulnerability, building a false sense of friendship and trust to facilitate the prolonged sexual abuse.

According to details from the trial at Sheffield Crown Court in October 2015, Swindlehurst denied all charges but was found guilty by a jury. He would buy the victims sweets and take them out, making them feel 'needed' before carrying out the assaults. He further manipulated them by insisting that no one would believe their accounts if they disclosed the abuse. The case came to light in April 2014 when the victims bravely reported the offences to the police, leading to Swindlehurst's arrest and a thorough investigation.

Detective Constable Elinor Duke, who led the investigation for South Yorkshire Police, highlighted the predatory nature of Swindlehurst's actions. 'This man took advantage of the fact that the children were vulnerable,' she stated. 'He gained their trust by building a friendship with them and making them feel ‘needed’. He would buy them sweets and take them out before carrying out a prolonged period of sexual abuse, telling them that there was no point telling anyone as nobody would believe them.' DC Duke praised the victims' courage, noting that their disclosure was motivated by a desire to prevent further harm to other children.

Swindlehurst was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court on 23 November 2015, following his conviction. The judge described the offences as 'horrific', reflecting the severity of the child sex crimes. DC Duke added, 'The bravery that the victims have shown in coming forward is exceptional. They did it with the motivation to prevent Swindlehurst hurting any other children. It is testament to the courage of the victims that he is now facing 20 years behind bars and I hope today’s sentencing sends a message that we will take action and catch those responsible for such horrific acts.' This case underscores the long-term impact of historical sexual abuse and the importance of victim testimonies in securing justice.
